چکیده

The structural geology of the northeastern Paleoproterozoic Amer belt, central Nunavut, has been evaluated in light new field mapping combined with legacy data and independently acquired subsurface geophysics data. Proterozoic sequences Ps1–Ps4 supergroup unconformably overlie Archean basement. Of these sequences, Ps1–Ps3 have intensely deformed (D 1 ) association Snowbird Orogeny (2.05–1.865 Ga). Ps4 was deposited on first three exhibits none D effects. Deformation within is slight compared to underlying restricted 2 folding that occurred 1.84–1.81 Ga Hudsonian Orogeny. forms core this study. comprises imbricate thrusting, intersequence detachment, generations isoclinal transposition. stratigraphic order maintained many areas by decoupling sequence packages along incompetent units so as not “mix” lithologies; there a fundamental mechanical stratigraphy. Within transposition can be otherwise intense. resultant architecture shallowly southwest-dipping tectonically rotated transposed layering (primary tectonic) similar ways orientation regardless whether preserved original bedding features or completely transposed. characterized recumbent folds, noncylindrical folds are sometimes rooted detachments, verging northeast. controlled pre-existing large-scale fabric, resulting overturned synforms parallel belt. Post-D fault modification northern side belt northwest-trending faults interpreted relate extension exhumation.

Foreland basin stratigraphic control on thrust belt evolution

The link between orogenic activity and foreland basin stratigraphy is well established; however, potential controls by foreland basin stratigraphy on thrust belt architecture have not been fully evaluated. Mechanical properties of typical foreland basin stratigraphic successions influence the structural development of fold-thrust belts in predictable ways. Fundamental features of foreland basin...

Rapid wastage of the Hazen Plateau ice caps, northeastern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada

Two pairs of small stagnant ice bodies on the Hazen Plateau of northeastern Ellesmere Island, the St. Patrick Bay ice caps and the Murray and Simmons ice caps, are rapidly shrinking, and the remnants of the St. Patrick Bay ice caps are likely to disappear entirely within the next 5 years. Vertical aerial photographs of these Little Ice Age relics taken during August of 1959 show that the larger...

U–Pb geochronological constraints for Paleoproterozoic evolution of the Core Zone, southeastern Churchill Province, northeastern Laurentia

The Core Zone of the Southeastern Churchill Province, northeastern Laurentia, is a composite of Paleoproterozoic lithotectonic domains assembled in the vise between obliquely colliding Archean Superior and North Atlantic cratons between ca. 1860 and 1810 Ma. Detailed geological and U–Pb geochronological studies of domains in the southern Core Zone highlight significant differences in Archean an...
